What is a Part P certificate?

Part P exists because domestic electrical work used to be invisible to building control entirely. Since 2005, defined categories of work are 'notifiable': installing new circuits, replacing a consumer unit, and certain work in bathrooms and other special locations. Notifiable work must end in certification.

The routes: an electrician registered with a competent-person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT and others) self-certifies, and you receive the electrical certificate plus a Building Regulations compliance certificate in the post; or unregistered installers route through building control, slower and costlier. Practical translation: use scheme-registered electricians and the paperwork happens automatically.

What the certificate is worth: at sale, your solicitor will be asked for Part P evidence for any obviously recent electrical work; landlords file it alongside EICRs; insurers can request it after incidents. Retrofitting compliance for uncertified work means retrospective inspection at your cost.

Note what Part P is not: a quality mark for every socket swap. Like-for-like replacements and simple additions to existing circuits are mostly non-notifiable, though they should still be done and tested competently, which is a standards question rather than a paperwork one.
