Sockets & small works in Bristol

Extra sockets, USB points, outdoor power, switch swaps and the small repairs other firms will not book in.

Freshly installed brushed brass double socket with USB ports
Short answer

Adding a double socket in Bristol costs £110–£180 excluding VAT; a run of new sockets, USB-C points, an outside socket or a garden office feed prices by the job, and we publish the common ones. Small electrical work is where households meet their electrician most often and where the trade behaves worst: unanswered messages and jobs too small to bother with. We book small works properly, batch them efficiently, and every job leaves tested.

This is for you if

  • Extension leads breeding behind the TV and the bed
  • A kitchen with two sockets doing the work of eight
  • No outdoor power: the mower, the fairy lights and the pressure washer all run through a window
  • USB charging wanted where the phones actually live
  • Cracked plates, loose switches, a socket that gets warm
  • A garden office or shed that needs its own properly protected feed

What's included

  • A fixed price for the defined job before we start
  • Sockets added from the existing ring where the circuit allows, honestly advised where it does not
  • Outdoor sockets with proper IP rating and RCD protection
  • Finishes that match your room: white, brushed steel, brass, black
  • Testing of every altered circuit, not just the new point
  • Certification where the work is notifiable

Questions

Sockets & repairs: what people ask

How much does an electrician charge to add a socket?

£110 to £180 excluding VAT for a double socket added to an existing circuit in Bristol, depending on wall construction and how far the nearest supply point is. Batching is the money-saver: the second and third sockets on the same visit cost much less than the first because the setup, testing and paperwork are shared. If you have a list of niggles, send the whole list; one visit through four jobs beats four visits through one.

Can I have a socket added anywhere?

Almost anywhere, with two honest constraints. The circuit must have capacity: most Bristol homes run ring finals that accept extra sockets happily, but a circuit already feeding a heavy load may need a different approach, which we tell you at the visit rather than discovering afterwards. And location rules apply: sockets need sensible separation from sinks, and outdoor or garden-building sockets must be RCD-protected and properly rated. Neither constraint usually kills the plan; it just shapes it.

What is the minimum charge for small electrical jobs?

Our small-works visits start at £110 excluding VAT, which covers up to roughly an hour on site plus the testing and paperwork the job needs. We would rather say that plainly than advertise a £45 callout that becomes £150 through line items. The way to get the best value from a minimum charge is batching: a socket, a switch swap and that flickering dimmer together fill the visit and split the fixed cost three ways.

Why does my socket feel warm?

A warm plate is a socket asking for attention: usually a loose terminal connection arcing gently behind the plate, a worn socket gripping plug pins badly, or a high sustained load (heaters and tumble driers show this most). Warm is a booking; hot, discoloured or smelling is switch-it-off-now territory. The fix is typically minutes once the plate is off, replacing the socket and remaking the connections, and it is precisely the kind of small job we exist to take seriously.
