How do I check an electrician is qualified?

Short answer

Search them on the public registers: NICEIC and NAPIT both run free find-a-contractor tools listing every registered business, and registration means their competence is assessed and their notifiable work self-certifies. Ask for their registration number and check it matches; a professional expects the question.

'Qualified' has a specific architecture in this trade. The qualifications are the exams and assessments behind the person (18th Edition wiring regulations, inspection and testing credentials); the registration is the business-level scheme membership (NICEIC, NAPIT and peers) that audits ongoing competence and grants the legal ability to self-certify notifiable work under Part P.

For a customer, registration is the checkable proxy: the schemes assess sample work periodically, require insurance, and run complaints procedures backed by work-quality guarantees. The public registers take a name or postcode and return the registered businesses; two minutes settles the question.

What registration does not guarantee: that the individual on your doorstep is the qualified supervisor rather than an improver sent alone, or that the price is fair. It sets the floor, not the ceiling; the behavioural checks (written quotes, willing answers) still matter.

Our position, stated once and plainly: our registration details, insurer and certification process are in writing on request and in the paperwork every job produces. Any firm that treats those questions as impertinent has answered a more important one.
