What testing finds
A new board must protect verified circuits, so testing can surface faults that were always there. Discoveries are priced separately, in writing, before we continue.
The wiring era
Red-and-black wiring, rewireable fuses and rubber cable each add scope. The house's electrical age moves quotes more than its size does.
Access and making good
Chasing solid walls, lifting fitted floors and working around furniture all take hours. Renovation-stage work, with walls open, is the cheap version of the same job.
Certification
Notifiable work legally ends in certificates, and producing them takes tested results. A quote silent on certification is not cheaper; it is incomplete.

Why do electrician quotes vary so much?
Because they rarely price the same job: quotes diverge on what is included (testing, certification, making good), what was assumed about your wiring, and whether the person quoting has seen the job. Compare quotes against one written scope, and ask each what happens when assumptions fail.

Yes, £110 excluding VAT for a small-works visit of up to roughly an hour including testing and paperwork. It is published here rather than discovered on the invoice, and batching several small jobs into one visit is the way to make it work hardest.
