Do I legally have to upgrade my old fuse box?

The legal position deserves stating plainly because it is so often misrepresented on doorsteps: there is no retrospective requirement to bring an owner-occupied home's electrics to current standards. Regulations apply when work is done, not to installations minding their own business.

Landlords live under different law: the EICR regime makes C1 and C2 observations legally actionable within 28 days, and boards without RCD protection commonly attract C2s. For rented property, 'do I have to?' therefore usually resolves to yes, at the next inspection if not before.

For homeowners the honest framing is risk rather than law. A rewireable fuse protects the cable from overload; it does essentially nothing about earth-leakage faults, the kind that electrocute people and start fires at damaged cables. RCD protection is the difference between a fault tripping in milliseconds and a fault persisting. That is why the upgrade tops the safety-per-pound table.

Events that sensibly trigger the decision: adding large loads (EV charger, electric shower), renovating (the board change folds into the project), an insurance renewal asking pointed questions, or an EICR giving you the coded evidence.
